LINOPRINTS
These are some of my favourite linoprints. I use the battleship grey, hessian-backed type and the Pfeil carving tools, which are perfect for the job.
When my children were little I used to do potato printing with them, cutting out little stars and shapes and stamping them on to paper with poster paint. Well, this is like the refined ‘grown-ups’ version (I hear the sharp intake of breath from lino purists!!) I’m not belittling the art of lino, I just like to think of it like this so I don’t get too precious about it. For me this is an enjoyable, relaxing, almost meditative process, it takes time and concentration but it’s simple, which I love. So go on - try it, and have some fun!
Having said that, carving lino is a bit more difficult than potatoes, and can be quite frustrating (…especially when you forget to reverse the text that’s taken you hours to perfect, and then it prints in mirror-form - grrr!!) but if you are careful and considerate, you can carve intricate, beautiful designs - AND if you are very clever (like my fabulous niece @HarrietPopham) you can create the most wonderful scenes and playful prints.
Most of these prints are carved on small tiles - about 7cm x 7cm - some are up to A4
